Friend House Gallery & Atelier
27 Bollingbrook Street
Continuing Exhibit: Downstairs in the Atelier: in the small exhibition space: “Ten Naked Men Are Coming to Town.” Susan Singer, who last fall brought us her wonderfully sensual fruit & vegetables, is back, bringing with her this time her bevy of male nudes. The ten gentlemen are headless & mostly limbless, allowing the viewer to observe their torsos unimpeded. Drawn with pastels in strong & startling colors, they are meant to provoke reactions. She delves boldly into the world of the male nude, presenting the naked body straightforwardly, allowing the viewer to gaze into its soul, to guess at its mysteries, to glean its wisdom, unhidden, unbound by the conventional mask that clothing can provide? Displayed in a small room, the drawings surround the viewer with their silent yet moving stances, graceful, awkward, stolid, frail, athletic, hefty. Each is a tribute to a specific model as well as to maleness and to humanity as a whole.
Gallery Talk: Artist Susan Singer on her experience in creating the images in “Ten Naked Men,” & why she did it. 6:00 pm.

Siblings Allyson Mills (vocals, acoustic guitar, rhythm) & Curtis Mills (vocals, acoustic & hollow-bady electric guitars, lead) & Chris Hale (vocals, mandolin, guitar), after playing locally for several years, both together & apart, thought they might be onto something when they began blending the sounds of old time, bluegrass, & folk with jazz & soul. When Samson Trinh (tenor sax, clarinet, flute) began sitting in from time to time, the anticipation grew. In October 2007, a break came: singer/songwriter Nellie Mckay needed an opener for her December gig at the Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis. The quartet added Matt Harris (upright bass) & Andy Brockman (drum & percussion) & performed to critical acclaim. The result is their first album, “Live at the Rams Head Tavern,” to be released this month. Don’t miss!
